Grossmont Hospital
Description of Facility and Operations
Grossmont Hospital is a 672,832 square foot campus of hospital and medical office buildings located at 5555 Grossmont Center Dr, La Mesa, CA 91942. The campus includes the following buildings: North Wing, South Wing, East Tower, West Tower - EDCCU, H&V, Women's Center, Behavioral Health (BHU), Physical Rehab, Cancer Center, Grossmont Medical Terrace (GMT), & Main Building.
The campus uses a combined heat and power (CHP) cogeneration system which provides approximately 96% of the site's electricity use. Multiple building automation systems (BAS) are used to control HVAC systems on the campus, including Siemens Insight & Desigo, Wonderware, Opto 22, and Climatec Alerton controls. These systems combine to administer ventilation, temperature, pressure, and humidity controls within these buildings. Major constant-volume and variable-volume air systems operate at all times, serving a combination of hospital procedure rooms, patient rooms, lobbies, offices, support areas, and medical equipment rooms. Lighting is primarily fluorescent, and typically operate either 24/7 or with a manual switch depending on the space type. Exterior lighting is primarily metal halide and controlled by timer.
Benchmarking
- Grossmont Hospital spends $5.78/sq. ft. for utilties.
- The building's energy use per square foot is 37% higher than the national median energy use intensity for hospitals.
Key Opportunities
• The cogeneration plant produces 96% of the site’s electricity use, which is an extremely high threshold. Energy savings opportunities which allow the reduction of electricity use may reduce the necessary output of cogeneration production for the site.
• Make-up water and blowdown water from cooling tower are not metered; install meters and pursue sewer charge credit for drift and evaporative losses. Est. cost per meter = $500 - $1,500.
